Talking EnglishUnderstanding the Critical Systems We Depend On
Improve your English by exploring essential infrastructure, emerging threats and the technologies shaping our lives.
Electricity. Water. Food. Healthcare. Communication.
Understand what keeps daily life running — and learn to talk about it in English.
Essential Systems. Meaningful Conversations.
What happens when the electricity stops? How does clean water reach our homes? Why do hospitals, food suppliers and transport networks depend on one another?
Talking English uses these questions to bring English practice together with an understanding of the world around us. Explore how essential systems work, what can interrupt them and how people prepare and respond.
What do we mean by critical systems?
Here, we mean the services, resources and networks whose failure can seriously affect daily life, health or safety.
You do not need to be an engineer or an expert. Start with a clear explanation, learn useful expressions and practise asking questions, describing problems and sharing your ideas.

Understand. Talk. Practise. Revise.
You can discuss a serious subject in simple English. Start with the main idea and build the language you need step by step.
1. Understand
Explore a short explanation. Ask what the system does and why it matters.
2. Talk
Use questions and dialogues to explain ideas and share your experience.
3. Practise
Work with vocabulary, useful expressions and grammar in context.
4. Revise
Check what you remember, then use the language in a new example.
Try a Conversation: A Power Cut
A familiar experience can help you start talking about critical infrastructure.
A: Have you ever experienced a power cut? (Haben Sie schon einmal einen Stromausfall erlebt?)
B: Yes. Last winter, the electricity went off for two hours. (Ja.
A: How did it affect you? (Wie hat sich das auf Sie ausgewirkt?)
B: The lights and our internet router stopped working. We used a torch and waited for the power to come back on.
Your turn: What would stop working in your home during a power cut? How would it affect your day?
Show useful phrases
- We depend on electricity for …
- If the power went off, I would …
- The biggest problem would be …
- We could still …
- When the power came back on, …
Check your understanding: What does “come back on” mean here?
Answer: To start working again after an interruption.
Vocabulary check: Complete “We depend ___ electricity.”
Answer: on. We depend on electricity. (Wir sind auf Strom angewiesen.)
